About this estimate
“Bits” is the theoretical cost of brute-forcing a keyspace of that size and length — not the real difficulty of cracking the password. Penalties (common words, keyboard runs, simple substitutions) say more about risk than the bit count: an 8-character random string can be safer than a 16-character “password12345678”.
One more thing people miss: length beats complexity. 16 lowercase characters (~75 bits) usually beat 8 mixed characters (~52 bits) — and they are far easier to remember.
