Checksum before you share

ToolShelf官方2026-09-10 22:22Share

A quick habit worth adopting: generate a hash before sending a file through any channel you do not fully control.

The hash tools cover MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512. For verifying integrity SHA-256 is the sensible default; MD5 and SHA-1 are still around for legacy checksums but should not be used to prove anything.

The workflow is two steps: hash the file, send the file, then hash it again on the other side and compare. If the two strings match, the file arrived intact.

Two details that matter in practice:

  • Comparison should be character-by-character. A truncated paste is the usual cause of a false mismatch.
  • Hashing a large file does take a moment — it reads the whole thing. The progress indicator is real, not decorative.

If you are comparing pasted hashes, watch for the usual trailing newline. It is behind most mismatches we see mentioned.

SHA-1 is still listed for compatibility with old checksums. It should not be used to prove integrity for anything new.
